Hawkish Liberals

James Atlas, biographer of Saul Bellow and Delmore Schwartz, had a good article last weekend in the N.Y. Times about several notable liberals who supported or were ambivalent about Gulf War II and where they stand now. He calls them neo-neoconservatives, but they look more like old-school anti-communist liberals to me.

Re: Representin'

It looks like Muhammad will let the professionals take over his defense.

We may never learn the meaning of the cookie allegory in Muhammad's opening statements.

DFW returns to the Infinite

This Guardian article offers a brief review of two books about infinity, one by a guy named Clegg and the other the long-awaited Cantor book by David Foster Wallace. I'll have to investigate whether the latter has been released in the States yet. I'm not too happy, though, to see that DFW runs down my boy the Stagyrite (a.k.a. the master of those who know, or, more simply, "the Philosopher").

[add.: It looks like I'm a little late on the draw. According to the DFW fan site, Howling Fantods, the release date of Everything and More was October 15th. I hadn't been to the site in a while, but if you're interested there is an interesting link there from May to an article about the first draft of Infinite Jest that DFW aficionados might find worth reading.]

Scotland Project Continues

On NRO today is my latest piece on the Senior Senator from Pennsylvania. Last month, Congress passed an emergency supplemental bill dealing with forest fires, floods and the like. Arlen Specter thought that would be a good chance to use taxpayer dollars address oral hygiene in Philadelphia.

The Pope and Life

In my latest Brainwash piece, I try to articulate what John Paul II, now celebrating 25 years of Popehood, means by "a culture of life." In an effort to ruffle some conservative feathers, I include capital punishment and war in with abortion and euthanasia in the "culture of death."

For good measure, here's Evangelium Vitae (Gospel of Life).
