Goodbye Crux This is officially my last post to the Crux. If we have any regular readers out there, you should know that we've decided it's time to abandon our noble experiment. If anyone wants to keep in touch with any of us, you can send a letter to the Crux, and we'll give you new contact information. My last thought: I recently saw the DVD of Mullholland Drive, and the biography of David Lynch (the director) just says, "David Lynch is an Eagle Scout." Wish I'd thought of that for my bio. Moore Human Events' Man of the Year: Roy Moore. Ann Coulter, in her exaggerated style, makes the point that leftists are the new puritans: Liberals in New York and Washington are consumed with what people are doing in Alabama and Nebraska. Nadine Strossen and Barry Lynn cannot sleep at night knowing that someone, somewhere, is gazing upon something that could be construed as a religious symbol. Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Art Online I've just come across more online exhibitions from the Philadelphia Museum of Art webpage. They are very detailed! The one from the recent Degas show even has the audio tour on the webpage. It's kind of interesting to see more museums creating these flashy internet versions of their exhibitions. I would certainly much rather go see the exhibit in person, but it's not a bad deal for shows I'm unable to see. Oh, the National Gallery in DC also has some online tours that are related to their own collection rather than a visiting exhibition. Feel creative (or like wasting time)? Have a little fun making your own Picasso head here. Thanks Lawless! Monday, December 15, 2003
Saddam Of course, capturing Saddam Hussein is excellent news, and it should help the US achieve its goal of establishing Iraq as an independent democracy. But as this reminds us, it's not necessarily the end of the Iraqi resistance. However, since this may have put a significant dent in morale of the resistance, this would be a very appropriate time to commit more troops. If it's used as an excuse to soften US presence, it may do more harm than good. Thursday, December 11, 2003
I hope I die before I get old Quick reminder about how the elderly, especially aging baby-boomers, will soon devastate the American economy if nobody does anything about Social Security and Medicare in the next ten years. Mostly a photo-op, some good Here's a review of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center last Tuesday. I wasn't able to make it, but the hoopla over people rather than the music would only have annoyed me in any case. However, I am quite glad to hear that the orchestra is receiving better instruments and new scores for their music library. [Add: The Telegraph today has a slightly more upbeat review about the evening. Oddly, the reporter has very little to say about the actual music.] Wednesday, December 10, 2003
One-third of American-trained Iraqi army quits. Well, so much for training an army of Iraqis to take over the security job. Monday, December 08, 2003
Progressives Rock! The people behind the Novak site are the Progressive Majority. From their homepage: "For too long, progressives have either been silent -- or needlessly defensive -- in important debates over what matters. That era is over." I'm glad to know the era of needless defensiveness has ended. I, for one, was getting a little annoyed at those testy progressives. They've also got a page where you can sign a petition to recall Bush. You can even contribute money to the recall effort. The small print: "While America does not have a provision in its constitution for a presidential recall, it does have the voice of the people and the power to send George Bush packing." Is there anything more beautifully left-wing that donating money to a symbolic recall? Plame Redux Mr. Wilson continued his effort to protect his wife by trotting her out in public and putting themselves in Vanity Fair. Meanwhile, leftwing 527s, designed to get around McCain-Feingold, are coming after my boss: http://www.bustbob.com/petition/ 08/31/2003 - 09/07/2003 09/07/2003 - 09/14/2003 09/14/2003 - 09/21/2003 09/21/2003 - 09/28/2003 09/28/2003 - 10/05/2003 10/05/2003 - 10/12/2003 10/12/2003 - 10/19/2003 10/19/2003 - 10/26/2003 10/26/2003 - 11/02/2003 11/02/2003 - 11/09/2003 11/09/2003 - 11/16/2003 11/16/2003 - 11/23/2003 11/23/2003 - 11/30/2003 11/30/2003 - 12/07/2003 12/07/2003 - 12/14/2003 12/14/2003 - 12/21/2003 12/21/2003 - 12/28/2003 |
